I've had to take a few days off from barefoot running - not because a couple of friends commented to my husband that they'd seen a mad woman out running, and then realised it was me (which is true) - but rather because I've had a painful splinter in my right foot.
I'm over that though and while trying to get back into the swing of things today, by walking the dog barefoot (both of us!) through the woods up near my local golf course, I had something of an epiphany.
I was finding a section of path set with sharp blocks of chalk particularly difficult and painful to negotiate. I remembered though what barefoot running guru Ken Bob Saxton advises in his book on barefoot running, about traversing steep gulleys: I bent my knees, sped up and started running "lightly" across the ground. Hey presto, even the really rough parts became relatively easy to negotiate.
It's great to be back on track, literally, and I'm looking forward to cover more ground over the next few weeks. And hopefully my shoe-softened soles will learn to better resist though pesky, tiny splinters!
